Which RRB should you choose? (Our analysis for Assam candidates)

You can apply to only one RRB, and your posting will be in that board's zone. Here is what the numbers show for the North-East:

RRBPostsNote
Guwahati37Closest board for most Assam candidates, and the exam language options include Assamese
Siliguri26Neighbouring North-East board with fewer posts
Northeast Frontier Railway (zone)63Guwahati and Siliguri boards together
  • Competition: Guwahati has only 37 posts, while boards like Mumbai (177), Jammu-Srinagar (122) and Chennai (119) have many more. Fewer seats can mean tougher competition, but your choice should match where you are willing to work.
  • Posting: As per the notice, transfers to another railway are not registered for 5 to 10 years, so pick a zone you can live in.
  • Category split: Check Annexure-B of the notice for the UR/SC/ST/OBC/EWS seats in your RRB before you decide.

Assam candidate checklist

  • OBC candidates: The caste must be in the central OBC list, and you need an OBC-NCL certificate in the prescribed format issued on or after 1 April 2026 and no later than 25 November 2026. Check that your Assam certificate fits this. See our PRC & Caste Certificate guide.
  • EWS: Income and asset certificate for FY 2025-26 as per the notice.
  • Eyesight: If you wear glasses or had LASIK, read the medical rules above before paying the fee.
  • Name match: Your name and date of birth must match your Matriculation certificate everywhere.
  • Photo and signature: The photo must be captured live during the application. The signature must be in running handwriting, not capital letters.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying to more than one RRB, which gets all applications rejected
  • Applying before your final degree result is out
  • Using someone else's mobile number or email, since they cannot be changed
  • Waiting for the last day, when rrbapply.gov.in can be slow
  • Paying after 27 November, which means the application is not accepted
  • Using unfair means, which leads to lifetime debarment from all RRB exams
